Title: Giorgia Meloni Meets Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago; Trump Nominates Tilman Fertitta as U.S. Ambassador to Italy
Article:
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held a private meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida this Saturday. The visit, unannounced prior to the event, included a dinner engagement, a documentary screening, and discussions on bilateral and international matters of interest.
During their five-hour encounter, Meloni and Trump shared the viewing of "Eastman Dilemma: Lawfare or Justice," a documentary exploring the contentious topic of a perceived "two-tiered judicial system" in the United States, alleging bias against conservative figures and lawyers in the American legal system.
"Very exciting, I’m here with a fantastic woman, Italy’s Prime Minister. She’s really taken Europe by surprise," declared Trump, as reported by Italian public radiotelevision RAI.
According to Italian sources, Meloni and Trump addressed several crucial issues during their meeting, including the case of imprisoned Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Iran, trade tariffs, and the Ukrainian conflict, among other bilateral and transatlantic concerns.
The meeting also saw the attendance of key figures in Trump’s upcoming administration, such as Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), designated as Secretary of State; Congressman Mike Waltz (R-FL), slated to serve as National Security Advisor; and Scott Bessent, nominated to be Treasury Secretary.
Meloni’s visit to Mar-a-Lago comes days before President Joe Biden’s planned visit to Italy from January 9 to 12, marking his final foreign trip before leaving office.
In preparation for his return to the White House, Trump has nominated businessman and philanthropist Tilman Fertitta as the U.S. Ambassador to Italy. Fertitta, the successful founder and CEO of Landry’s Inc., a hospitality and entertainment conglomerate employing nearly 50,000 Americans, has also owned the NBA’s Houston Rockets.
In a message on his Truth Social platform, Trump praised Fertitta as "a consummate businessman who has founded and built one of our country’s leading entertainment and real estate companies, employing approximately 50,000 Americans."
A noted philanthropist, Fertitta has been recognized for supporting causes related to children, law enforcement, and medical services. Additionally, Fertitta played a significant role in Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, donating at least $487,300 to Trump 47 and $3,300 to the presidential reelection committee.
Bloomberg reports that Fertitta is one of the top donors selected by Trump to fill key positions in his next administration. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Fertitta will assume an instrumental role in strengthening U.S.-Italy relations at a critical juncture. As Italy’s first woman prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, shares Trump’s ideological alignment, their mutual affinity could shape diplomatic dynamics, bolstering cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, and security.
As one of the United States’ primary European allies and a NATO member, Italy plays a pivotal role in transatlantic politics. Fertitta will focus on fortifying bilateral ties and propelling collaboration in strategic sectors, leveraging political and business connections between the two nations.
