Bulgarian Cultural Treasures Under Threat in Los Angeles Wildfire
A raging wildfire in Los Angeles is threatening the temporary residence of two of Bulgaria‘s most significant cultural treasures, housed in the Getty Museum. This was announced by journalist and California University lecturer, Christoforo Karadjov, on "Dobro utro, Bulgaria" on Nova Television.
The fire is encroaching on the museum building that is temporarily hosting two of Bulgaria’s greatest cultural wealth pieces. In response, Bulgaria’s Minister of Culture, Najden Todorov, has sent a letter to the Getty Museum’s management requesting that the Bulgarian exhibits be moved to a safer location, according to Bulgarian National Television (BNT).
The exhibition, dedicated to Ancient Thrace, comprises artifacts from 18 Bulgarian museums and was due to remain in the U.S. until March. The Getty Museum has confirmed that the exhibit is secure, protected by fireproof vaults, and is in constant contact with its management. While the fire is close, there is currently no direct threat to the museum.
The Getty Museum has released a statement assuring that there is no danger to the exhibits and detailing the safety measures taken due to the fire. The fire in Los Angeles has prompted an emergency declaration, with more than 30,000 residents ordered to evacuate and over 13,000 buildings at risk. Approximately 46,000 households and businesses are without power. At least 510 hectares in the Pacific Palisades area between Santa Monica and Malibu have been burned, according to official reports.
