Google is restricting artificial intelligence model access for free and entry-level users, moving its most capable reasoning tools behind higher-cost paywalls. Starting October 9, 2026, users on the free tier of the Gemini app will lose access to the Gemini Flash and Pro models, leaving Flash-Lite as their sole option for daily interactions.
Google is reserving the Pro model exclusively for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions to nudge regular users toward higher-tier plans, according to Android Headlines. This restructuring follows the launch of Gemini 4 Argon and the release of a native Windows desktop application.
Google Limits Model Access by Tier
Free users are limited to Flash-Lite under the updated access structure. Those on the Google AI Plus subscription also face downgrades, losing access to the Pro model while retaining access to Flash and Flash-Lite.
Google is notifying Plus members via email regarding the specific timelines for when these downgrades will take effect.

Google AI Pro subscribers now gain access to the Deep Think reasoning engine, a tool previously exclusive to the Ultra plan. This gives Pro users additional parallel reasoning horsepower for coding and complex logic tasks.
Users across all plan levels can still adjust model effort levels between low, medium, and high. Increasing the effort level enables the AI to provide deeper detail for difficult queries, but it accelerates the consumption of the user’s usage limits.
Antigravity Integrates Gated Claude Models
Google is integrating Anthropic’s flagship models, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5, into its developer-focused platform, Antigravity. Full access to these 5.5-era models is unlocked only for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Users on Free, AI Plus, and Enterprise plans are explicitly excluded from using the new Claude 5.5 models, as are users who obtained Pro tier access through discounts, promotions, or free trials.
Google has announced a deprecation date of November 2, 2026, for older models, including GPT-OSS-120B and Claude Opus and Sonnet 4.6. Native Gemini models, such as Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8, will remain universally accessible across all tiers.
Model Availability Matrix (Effective October 9)
| Google AI Plan | Flash-Lite | Flash | Pro | Deep Think |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free (No Plan) | Yes | No | No | No |
| AI Plus | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| AI Pro | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| AI Ultra | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Gemini 4 Argon Sets Access Precedent
The specialized Gemini 4 Argon model, currently in limited early testing for deep reasoning, is expected to be restricted to Pro and Ultra subscribers. Industry signals suggest the upcoming Gemini 4 family architecture will maintain this strict access structure from its inception.
AI Plus users might gain access if the model is determined to be an optimized Flash-tier variant. If it requires heavy parallel compute, it is expected to remain behind the $20+ subscription tier.
Google has not yet confirmed if university-tied student plans will be granted Pro access or excluded alongside trial tiers within the Antigravity ecosystem.
