Google has officially introduced the Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google event, bringing hardware improvements, increased pricing, and a major focus on proactive health and AI software updates. The latest smartwatch retains the familiar round-screen design of its predecessor, coming in 41mm and 45mm sizes with a 3,000-nit brightness display, up to 40 hours of battery life, and new color options such as Canyon, Olive, Fog, and Obsidian, alongside a Stephen Curry Special Edition.
Google Unveils the Pixel Watch 5 with Advanced Health Tools
Under the hood, the Pixel Watch 5 features a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip delivering a 12% faster CPU and 20% faster on-device intelligence, paired with 50% more RAM (3GB) for an overall 20% speed boost. According to TechCrunch, the 41mm version starts at $399—marking a $50 price increase from last year—while the larger model starts at $429. A special Stephen Curry variant is priced at $579. Pre-orders begin on Wednesday, with the official release scheduled for August 20.
Upgraded Health and Fitness Tracking Capabilities
Health and fitness features form the bulk of the updates for the Pixel Watch 5, introducing blood pressure trends and insulin resistance monitoring. Neither feature is diagnostic; instead, both function as wellness alerts that require a minimum of a week’s worth of data and provide monthly summaries. The blood pressure feature uses the optical heart rate sensor and motion sensors to monitor blood flow patterns, backed by testing against 24-hour monitors and an advanced waveform model trained on more than 1 billion minutes of data from over 500,000 people.

The insulin resistance feature combines signals from sleep, heart rate, physical activity, and other health data, using a large sensor model to identify long-term metabolic changes without requiring any blood draws. Both wellness monitoring tools are scheduled to roll out in September and will also arrive on the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Fitbit Air. Additionally, the device features a new emergency detection capability that can identify a persistent drop in oxygen saturation and contact emergency services if a breathing emergency may be occurring, launching initially in select European countries.
Enhanced Gemini AI Integration and Sleep Metrics
Google has integrated Gemini more deeply into the user interface, enabling offline voice control for simple tasks such as starting timers and launching apps. Users can utilize a “Raise to Talk” gesture to interact with the assistant more quickly. Proactive AI suggestions surface relevant actions based on context, such as checking Google Calendar in response to a text message, while a dynamic watchface icon displays real-time updates for workouts, timers, and ETAs.

Sleep tracking has also been refined, offering a 15% improvement in sleep-stage accuracy, a new bedtime watch face, a “Smart Wake” feature to wake users at an optimal point in their sleep cycle, and a sleep breathing quality metric that tracks minute-by-minute changes in blood oxygen levels. Furthermore, the watch delivers its most accurate GPS route tracking yet, mapping routes with double the accuracy of previous generations.
