The tin sector’s alarming situation has grabbed headlines yet again as Dr. Bambang Hero Saharjo, an IPB lecturer, claimed that the nation could have suffered up to Rp300 trillion in losses. However, his methodology and transparency have been heavily criticized by experts, sparking fresh debates.
Ilham Wijaya, Chairman of the Executive Board of Mahasiswa Fakultas Kehutanan dan Ilmu Lingkungan (BEM FHIL) at Universitas Halu Oleo, led the criticism. He argued that the Rp300 trillion figure was "too simplistic and lacked depth," particularly regarding the calculation of lost tin volumes.
"An astonishing Rp300 trillion loss is thrown around without clear data and accountable methodology. Initially, APH reported a loss of Rp271 trillion, but now Rp300 trillion is mentioned. We urge the BPK to re-calculate and ask Commission III of DPR RI to ensure a credible and accurate figure," Wijaya stated.
Experts also questioned the inclusion of other potential contributing factors, such as global tin price fluctuations and inefficient policies, in the calculations. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive audit of the entire supply chain, from exploration to distribution, to pinpoint the root cause of the problem accurately.
Wijaya further elaborated, "Without a clear audit and examination of each distribution layer, we cannot simply accept such a large figure. This could otherwise erode public trust in law enforcement."
Dr. Bambang Hero was urged to correct his statement and ensure that all data presented to the public is based on accurate, credible, and accountable methodology. Without such steps, this controversy may further tarnish public perception of legal enforcement.
