A devastating house fire in Christchurch has left a family shattered, claiming the lives of a mother and her three-year-old daughter.
Emergency services were called to a residence on Whitehall St in the suburb of Mairehau at approximately 8.25pm on Thursday. Following the incident, Detective Senior Sergeant Jo Carolan confirmed on Friday evening that the three-year-old girl and her mother—who passed away later in the hospital—had died.
The tragedy also left several other children injured. While three of the surviving children have been discharged into the care of family members, police report that a two-year-old girl remains in the hospital in stable condition with moderate injuries. In total, five people were injured in the blaze, including four children under the age of six.
A Family’s Struggle for Recovery
The loss is compounded by a dire financial situation for the children’s grandmother, Shiree. Described by a relative in a Givealittle appeal as the “rock of our family,” Shiree is now facing the daunting task of organizing two funerals while caring for two of her remaining grandchildren who lost their mother.
The relative noted that Shiree, who is on a pension and was uninsured, “has walked away with nothing but the clothes on her back.” While the material loss is considered secondary to the loss of “two precious lives,” the family is seeking assistance to secure a new home, purchase essential items for the four children in Shiree’s care, and cover headstone and funeral costs.
As of 12.30pm on Saturday, the community had raised more than $31,000 through the appeal to support the family.
Community Impact and Investigation
Neighbors expressed shock and grief following the fire. Surendren Subashchandrabose, who discovered the road blocked after returning from work, stated he was “so worried” and has been praying for the family’s safety. Another neighbor, Noel John Jabiguero, reported seeing “heaps of police cars” and smoke around 9pm on Thursday, describing the news of the deaths as “really sad.”
Detective Sergeant Brent Menzies confirmed on Saturday that the scene examination has been completed. While the exact cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, police have stated that the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
What may happen next:
- Police may maintain an increased presence in the neighborhood as inquiries continue to speak with witnesses and family members.
- The funds raised through the Givealittle appeal are likely to be used for the immediate needs of the surviving children and the funeral arrangements.
- The family may continue to rely on community support to secure permanent housing.
