Greece to supply Ukraine with 24 Sea Sparrow missiles to boost defense capabilities
ATHENS, Greece — In a significant show of support for Ukraine, Greece has agreed to provide 24 Sea Sparrow missiles, bolstering the latter’s defense against current threats. The news was reported by Kathimerini and confirmed by "European Truth."
The missiles, produced in the United States and in use for nearly four decades, form part of Greece’s naval and air force arsenal. However, Greek military standards classify them as surplus to immediate operational needs. The Sea Sparrow is a short-range, surface-to-air missile system, and Ukraine already possesses the necessary launchers for its deployment.
This transfer is part of broader Greek military aid to Ukraine, encompassing artillery shells, weapons, and ammunition. Notably, the transfer aligns with Greece’s commitments to support Ukraine’s defense efforts without compromising its own defensive capabilities in the Aegean Sea.
Earlier this year, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis ruled out supplying Ukraine with Patriot and S-300 air defense systems. He stated that these systems are "critically important for our deterrence potential."
Lately, Ukraine and Greece inked a bilateral security agreement in Brussels in October, underscoring their commitment to strategic cooperation.
