Headline: 🚍 Special Green Tickets and Free Parking: Sofia‘s Air Quality Measures
Article:
The Sofia Municipality has announced a green initiative for the upcoming Thursday and Friday, January 9th and 10th, aimed at alleviating the city’s air pollution. During these two days, residents will enjoy a special "green ticket" for just 1 BGN, allowing unlimited travel on the city’s public transport. Additionally, parking in buffer zones around metro stations will be free of charge.
These measures come in response to the elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM10) in Sofia’s air and forecasts of moderate pollution for the next two days by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH). The municipality urges citizens to leave their cars at home and use public transport to help reduce emissions.
The green ticket can be purchased using a bank card directly on the bus or tram, from vehicle conductors, online via the Center for Urban Mobility (CGM) website, or at CGM and "Metropolitan" cashiers, either as a printed ticket or an e-ticket on your card. However, please note that this offer does not apply to night public transport.
Other initiatives include additional street cleaning and the continued enforcement of driving restrictions for vehicles belonging to emission categories 1 and 2 within the "small ring" zone in central Sofia. Since the implementation of these restrictions on December 1st, the number of violators has nearly halved, reaching around 2,000 per day.
To protect public health, the municipality has also recommended that schools and kindergartens limit outdoor activities for children until the end of the week. Furthermore, the municipality monitors air quality through its "For the Air" information system and keeps citizens updated on pollution forecasts.
