Bergen op Zoom Supermarket Blaze Causes Major Damage on New Year’s Eve

The blaze was discovered around a quarter to one in the morning, with towering flames and thick smoke billowing into the night sky.

The fire department swiftly responded, deploying multiple fire trucks and high-ladder vehicles to combat the inferno and prevent it from spreading to neighboring houses. The fire was brought under control around two o’clock in the morning.

Despite the intense flames, firefighters managed to prevent the supermarket from being completely consumed by the fire. While there were some small fires inside the building, they did not spread as fiercely as the roof fire, according to the Zeeland-West-Brabant Safety Region.

Arrest Made During Firefighting Efforts

During the firefighting operations, a man was arrested after causing a disturbance with the on-scene mobile unit. When asked to leave by officers, he began arguing with a bystander and was eventually apprehended following a struggle.

Thick Smoke Advises Residents to Stay Indoors

The fire released a large amount of smoke, prompting the fire department to advise nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed. By two o’clock, the flames were extinguished, leaving only white smoke visible.

Notably, a burned-out car was found on the supermarket’s parking lot, which caught fire earlier in the day.
