Rusland heeft verspreid over Oekraïne verscheidene luchtaanvallen uitgevoerd met drones en raketten. Overal is het luchtalarm afgegaan. Ook steden in het uiterste westen en de hoofdstad Kyiv zijn onder vuur komen te liggen, meldt de luchtmacht van Oekraïne.
Volgens de lokale autoriteiten is er in verschillende delen van Kyiv brand uitgebroken in woongebouwen. Burgemeester Vitali Klytsjko zegt dat er zeker vier doden en enkele tientallen gewonden zijn.
Timur Tkatsjenko, het hoofd van het militaire bestuur van de stad, zei dat de drones de stad in golven naderden en dat luchtverdedigingseenheden probeerden ze af te weren.
Tkatsjenko zei verder dat drones de bovenste verdiepingen van een flatgebouw hadden geraakt en brand hadden veroorzaakt. Ook was brand uitgebroken in een appartementengebouw. Tkatsjenko waarschuwde voor meer aanvallen met raketten.
Aanval luchtmachtbases
De Russische aanvallen volgen op
een grootschalige Oekraïense droneaanval op Russische luchtmachtbases, afgelopen zondag. Daarbij zijn volgens Oekraïne tientallen militaire vliegtuigen, waaronder bommenwerpers, vernietigd of beschadigd.
De Russische president Poetin noemde het “terreurdaden” en kondigde aan met vergelding te komen. Poetin sprak woensdag telefonisch met de Amerikaanse president Trump. De laatste sprak over een “goed gesprek, maar niet een die onmiddellijk tot vrede zal leiden”.
‘Vechtende kinderen’
Onder druk van de VS zijn Oekraïense en Russische delegaties recentelijk enkele keren bijeengekomen om te praten over een staakt-het-vuren. Dat leverde alleen afspraken op over een gevangenenruil.
Trump vergeleek Poetin en Zelensky gisteren met twee vechtende kinderen. “Ze haten elkaar, en ze vechten in een park en je probeert ze uit elkaar te halen. Maar ze willen niet uit elkaar. Soms kun je ze beter even laten vechten en ze daarna uit elkaar halen.”
Zelensky pleit al heel lang voor meer druk op Poetin om concessies af te dwingen. Hij daagde Poetin ook uit om direct met hem te onderhandelen in Istanbul, maar de Russische president hield dat af. De Oekraïense stafchef Andriy Yermak zei deze week bij een bezoek aan Washington dat Rusland alleen gedwongen kan worden tot concessies omdat er in Moskou geen politieke wil is om de oorlog te beëindigen.
