Rockstar Games has detailed expansive open-world features for Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing a playable area three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2 and a Vice City twice the size of Los Santos. The game introduces over 600,000 animations, enterable interiors, safehouses, and transit options ahead of its November 19, 2026 release.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be a vastly more interactive open-world experience than its predecessor, with development teams packing Vice City with dense, reactive environments and granular player interactions. New previews and reporting have outlined the sheer scale of the map, alongside technical improvements ranging from expanded animation counts to overhauled movement controls.
Map Scale and Vice City Exploration
Developers revealed to The New York Times that the overall map is three times larger than the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone spans an area twice the size of Los Santos, leaving ample room for hundreds of enterable interiors and diverse regional biomes.
Getting across that massive geography relies on a revamped transit network. Players can utilize buses, trains, trams, taxis, and RydeMe, the game’s equivalent of a ridesharing service. Meanwhile, environmental details track realistic conditions: traffic density shifts depending on the time of day, sand clings to characters’ shoes, and puddles reflect surrounding windows and mirrors.
Deep Safehouse Mechanics and Living NPCs
As reported by Vice, those open-world features include some surprisingly detailed safehouses. In GTA 6, players can eat food, throw away trash, and even shave at bathroom mirrors, while hair can be cut shorter at a safehouse while growing it back out requires a trip to a barber. GTA 6 also has a zoo and functional drive-thrus, and snacks and drinks can still be purchased.
Social media is fully integrated into GTA 6, with NPCs able to post about events happening around the world. Players can then travel to those locations and actually witness the events in real time, making GTA 6’s social media feel like another way of discovering things rather than just another menu. According to TGG, who visited Rockstar last month and witnessed three hours of Grand Theft Auto 6, safehouses and gyms are fully interactive with all kinds of exercises and even memberships, tracking repetitions and overall progress to improve health and stamina.
Microtransactions, Pricing, and Console Performance
Rockstar told Kinda Funny Games that there are no microtransactions in the single-player story, meaning no using real money to buy items in-game. IGN notes that a certain amount of capital is required to maintain the flow of the main missions, which can be earned by robbing convenience stores and stealing cars.

On the hardware side, Day Jones of Flow Games claims to have spoken to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, who said that GTA 6 on consoles is running at 30 frames per second currently. Details on resolution and ray tracing remain up in the air, although there are reports out there that claim the preview was running at 1440p, and whether high frame rates are possible is purportedly something that Nelson needs to discuss with the technical team.
Overhauled Animation and Combat Systems
Character motion benefits from a massive technological leap, with Grand Theft Auto 6 having well over 600,000 animations, contrasted with its last game which had 300,000, and Grand Theft Auto 5 which had 55,000. Depending on a car’s age and how expensive it is, entry methods can range from a slim jim to unlock the door to outright cloning car keys, and they may even have alarms and trackers.
Controls have also been refined for fluid movement. Crouching is now separate from the traditional cover system and lets players strafe during combat, shoulder switching is carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2, and sprinting is no longer mapped to tapping X and instead uses the L2 left-joystick prompt. Confirmed apps on characters’ phones include BuckMe, RydeMe, Scooter Bros, WhatUp, Waink, Snapmatic, and a fitness app, while Scooter Bros can actually deliver a player’s personal vehicle.
