A random shooting attack on a busy Cambridge corridor on Monday afternoon left two motorists with life-threatening injuries and triggered a massive police response along the banks of the Charles River.
Authorities identified the alleged gunman as Tyler Brown of Boston. According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan, Brown allegedly walked down the middle of Memorial Drive, firing between 50 and 60 rounds from an assault-style rifle in a matter of minutes. The barrage of gunfire targeted various vehicles in traffic, causing panicked motorists to abandon their cars and flee on foot.
The Confrontation and Response
The incident began shortly after 1:00 p.m. Cambridge police were first alerted at 1:06 p.m. Following a report from Boston police regarding a man acting erratically and believed to be armed with a rifle. By the time law enforcement arrived near Memorial Drive, Brown was already actively firing at traffic.
The attack was brought to an end when a Massachusetts State Police trooper and an armed civilian—identified by District Attorney Ryan as a licensed firearm carrier and former Marine—confronted the gunman. Both individuals moved toward the suspect while other pedestrians and drivers sought cover.
“People were jumping from their cars, scattering in various directions,” Ryan said. “Both that trooper and that civilian, rather than going in one direction, went towards the suspect with their weapons to try to end that situation.”
Brown was shot in the extremities during the exchange and was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he is currently being treated in the intensive care unit. Authorities also noted that a responding State Police cruiser was struck by gunfire during the event.
Witness Accounts of Chaos
The shooting occurred on a mild spring afternoon in an area typically populated by students, joggers, and cyclists. While the nearby campuses of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were not affected, the proximity of the violence created a scene of terror.
Adonna Simpson-Correia, who was driving a van-style school bus with a monitor on board, described the moment the gunman targeted her vehicle. “He pointed his, it looked like a machine gun, at my windshield,” she said. “We both got out and ran, and he kept shooting.”
Other witnesses described the randomness of the attack. Todd Czubek, a deaf studies lecturer at Boston University, reported seeing a man emerge from a parking lot wielding what appeared to be an automatic weapon and “shooting randomly.” Joseph Minino Rodriguez, watching from an apartment balcony, observed the gunman fire at least five shots before the weapon appeared to jam, eventually firing toward a truck before being “dropped” during a gunfight with police.
Shannon Young, 34, estimated that “easily 100” people fled the area as traffic snarled and drivers attempted frantic U-turns. Young and another driver, Brandon Mansolf, were forced to flee on foot after bullets struck their vehicles.

The speed of the response is being credited with preventing further loss of life. Cambridge Acting Police Commissioner Pauline Wells stated that officers “ran toward danger without hesitation,” adding, “Without their quick and selfless acts, today’s situation would have been a lot worse.”
Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble praised the transition from tactical response to medical aid, noting that “the minute that the bullets stopped and the suspect was down … Police officers immediately rendered aid.”
The aftermath left a sprawling crime scene near the River Street Bridge, with a large section of Memorial Drive sealed off. Investigators focused their efforts on a commercial plaza at 808 Memorial Drive, including a Dunkin’ store, and two nearby gas stations.
