Halifax residents can now apply for the annual Neighbourhood Placemaking program to secure municipal funding and guidance for community-led projects, with applications remaining open until Sunday, Nov. 8. Backed by the municipality, the initiative aims to help neighbours connect through hands-on improvements like seed and plant libraries, neighbourhood benches, upcycled art installations, and street painting, according to a municipal release.
Project Funding Streams and Support Levels
The program offers three distinct project streams, each featuring different funding thresholds based on the scope of the work. Placemaking Create supports neighbour-led projects of any theme, offering successful applicants between $1,500 and $4,000 in support funding. Placemaking Art backs projects that address any topic and involve hiring an artist, with successful applicants eligible to receive between $3,000 and $7,000. Environmental Placemaking targets projects contributing to neighbourhood climate resilience and sustainability, providing funding between $3,000 and $10,000.

Application Requirements and Strategic Goals
Applicants must complete an online form that asks specific questions about team members, a project description, and why the project matters. This municipal effort directly supports the 2026-2030 Strategic Plan, which outlines the city’s vision for more welcoming and livable communities. Successful applicants across all streams will receive training, guidance, and financial support for their neighbourhood projects.
Information Sessions and Deadlines
The municipality will host a virtual program information session on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants can register by emailing placemaking@halifax.ca with their name, neighbourhood, and email address.
