A Tradition of Civic Education
Virginia Boys State, founded in 1935, aims to educate young men in civic responsibility and democratic participation. Participants are nominated by local American Legion posts and selected through a competitive interview process. The selection considers academic achievements, leadership ability, civic engagement, and citizenship.
The partnership between Hampden-Sydney College and the American Legion Boys State of Virginia aligns with the college’s mission of developing “good men and good citizens.” President Larry Stimpert stated that hosting the event is a “natural extension of our institutional mission and values.”
