Breaking News: Harvey Moeis Sentenced to 12 Years Imprisonment and Fined Rp 1 Billion for State Coffers Loss of Rp 300 Trillion

In a landmark decision, the court has sentenced property tycoon Harvey Moeis to 12 years imprisonment and a fine of Rp 1 billion for his role in the Rp 300 trillion state coffers embezzlement case. This sentencing follows a lengthy trial that culminated today, with the court finding Moeis guilty of corruption charges in theTimah case.

The court ruled that Moeis had causally contributed to theRp 300 trillion state coffers loss, which is a fraction of the allegedRp 300 trillion collation and sales of state-owned tin (timah) company’s assets-block B. The prosecution had initially demanded a 25-year prison term and a Rp 10 billion fine.

Moeis, a high-profile businessman, was arrested in 2019 following investigations into the corruption case. He was accused of receiving bribes totaling Rp 300 trillon from the sale of state-owned tin company’s assets-block B, causing an immense loss to the state coffers.

The court identified several pieces of evidence supporting Moeis’s guilt, including a letter written by him to his wife Sandra Dewi requesting that she return the money he had given her, as he was anticipating potential legal troubles. Despite Moeis’s request, Dewi reportedly declined to return the money, leading to further tensions between the couple.

Moeis’s lawyer had earlier tried to downplay Dewi’s testimony during the trial, stating that it was merely a "domestic matter" and not relevant to the corruption case at hand. However, the court appeared to have taken Dewi’s testimony into account in its final decision.

The trial has captivated the nation, with many awaiting the final verdict. The court’s decision is seen as a stern warning against corruption, a prevalent issue in Indonesia. Anti-corruption activists have praised the court’s decision, calling it a significant victory in the country’s ongoing battle against corruption.
