JOHANNESBURG — South African National Parks (SANParks) is currently searching for the driver of a Mercedes-Benz SL500 who became the subject of social media backlash after footage surfaced showing him driving recklessly within the Kruger National Park.
The viral video captures the driver performing wheel spins, drifting, and speeding through water within the national park’s environment.
Official Condemnation and Environmental Impact
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw has strongly condemned the incident, characterizing the driver’s actions as “dangerous, reckless and unlawful conduct.”
According to Louw, such behavior demonstrates a “blatant disregard for conservation regulations, public safety, environmental protection measures, and the authority of park management.”
Internal Investigation into Staff Conduct
The investigation extends beyond the driver. A separate piece of video footage appears to show a gate guard encouraging the driver’s behavior.
SANParks has confirmed that the officials seen supporting these actions will face consequences, as their “irresponsible actions” are contrary to staff conduct and park rules.
Driver Issues Apology
Following the public outcry, the driver released a video apology. He stated that he understands why his actions created a negative reaction and that he takes the concerns seriously.

In the video, the driver claimed his primary goal has been to help other young South Africans make money online and noted that it was never his intention to set a poor example. He pledged that his future actions at national parks would reflect the respect the environment deserves.
Potential Consequences
SANParks has indicated a commitment to dealing with the matter seriously. Depending on the outcome of the identification process, the following scenarios may unfold:
- The identified individual could face the full consequences of the law.
- The driver may be subject to the imposition of fines.
- Access privileges to all protected areas managed by SANParks could be withdrawn.
- The involved gate officials are likely to face disciplinary actions for their role in the incident.
