Italian Cardiothoracic Surgeon Resigns After Wave of Abuse Over Unvaccinated Patient

In a surprising turn of events, Dr. Enzo Mazzaro, the chief of Cardiochirurgia at the renowned Ospedale di Cattinara in Trieste, Italy, has decided to temporarily step down from his position following a barrage of insults and threats. The backlash was that result of a patient’s claim that he had been removed from the surgery waiting list due to his refusal to get vaccinated.

Dr. Mazzaro was quick to deny any involvement in the patient’s case, stating, "I’ve never treated this patient. Yet, my family is living in fear." He went on to explain that his signature was merely on a letter sent to the patient, discarding responsibility for any possible deterioration in the patient’s condition. The letter, however, seemed to emphasize the patient’s refusal to get vaccinated rather than his refusal to have surgery.

The patient in question was diagnosed with a valvular heart condition in 2021 and has since refused both surgery and vaccinations. Despite this, the hospital has continued to monitor his condition, conducting periodic reviews and encouraging him to reconsider surgery, most recently in January 2025.

Recently, the patient’s condition took a turn for the worse due to severe immunosuppression, making vaccinations necessary for his safety during the scheduled surgery. However, the patient’s stance has remained unchanged. In a statement, the hospital stressed that vaccinations were not a prerequisite for surgery, echoing the patient’s previous statements.

The political fallout from this incident has been swift. Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) have scheduled an interrogation with the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci. Democratic Party (PD) justice spokesperson, Debora Serracchiani, weighed in as well, demanding better protections for threatened healthcare professionals. She also criticized the government’s recent decisions, suggesting they have contributed to the growing disrespect for medical science.

As the medical community grapples with anti-vax sentiments and threats, the need for clear communication and understanding between healthcare providers and patients becomes increasingly pressing. The Italian medical system, known for its high standards, finds itself navigating these challenging waters in the digital age.
