Syria‘s Changing dynamics: A Surge in Kidnappings and Murders Under HTS; Alawite Community Most Targeted
Article:
In recent reports, Russia has sounded the alarm on an escalating trend of kidnappings and murders in Syria, where the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a dominant Islamist faction in the northwest, has beeniff resulting in a notable surge in these crimes. The United Nations (UN) has also verified 61 such incidents dating back to late 2021, suggesting an alarming pattern of violence that has largely flown under the international radar.
The majority of those affected by these abuses are from the Alawite community, a minority Shiite Muslim sect that traditionally supports the Assad regime. The Syrian government, in response to these developments, has accused Turkey of providing support to HTS and other extremist groups operating in the region. However, Turkey maintains that it only backs moderate opposition forces and has called for a joint committee to investigate the allegations.
Tensions have also escalated among civilians in the war-ravaged country. A video showing an assault on a convoy carrying pro-Assad loyalists in the town of al-Qadah has sparked outrage andATEGORY{R3Fprotests among the Alawite community, with many taking to the streets to condemn the attack and demand justice.

As international attention remains largely focused on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, scoreweet forces” on the ground in Syria continue to perpetrate grave violations, leaving thousands of civilians living in fear and uncertainty.
