A family man’s life was cut short on the first day of 2023, as a result of a tragic firecracker incident during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Üllő. P. István, a 33-year-old father of two, succumbed to his injuries the following day at a local hospital.
The night started as a festive gathering, with friends and family coming together to welcome the new year with a vibrant display of fireworks. However, the celebrations took a tragic turn when a misfired firecracker struck P. István in the face. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries the next day.
According to the Pest County Police Headquarters, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 1st on László Street in Üllő. The firecracker, which was intended to be a part of the New Year’s festivities, malfunctioned and inflicted fatal injuries on P. István.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the firecracker was lit by a neighboring resident, who has since been identified as a person of interest in the case. The suspect is said to have provided the fireworks to the victims and lit the fatal firecracker.
P. István was taken to a Budapest hospital in the early hours of New Year’s Day, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he passed away at around midday. His wife and father were present at his bedside but were unable to see his face, which was severely injured and covered with bandages.

As investigations continue, the police have launched an inquiry into the case of negligent homicide due to reckless endangerment in the name of an activity. The suspect is currently the focus of the investigation as he may have supplied and lit the firecracker that led to P. István’s untimely death.
