A massive wildfire erupted on Tuesday in the exclusive Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, prompting the evacuation of nearly 30,000 residents and putting more than 13,000 homes at risk. The blaze, which started around 10:30 AM, has scorched hundreds of acres in the hilly north-east area of the city in just a few hours.
Kristin Crowley, chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department, confirmed the evacuations and warned that the fire was moving rapidly. "This is a fast-moving fire," she said at a press conference. "We’re dealing with critical conditions."
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who also participated in the press conference, warned that the situation could worsen between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, when winds are expected to pick up to speeds of up to 160 km/h. "Not everyone is out of danger," he said. "If you’re asked to evacuate, do so immediately."
Residents like Lori Libonati, who spoke to the Los Angeles Times before leaving her home, described the scene as "like hell." Thick smoke made evacuation efforts difficult, and authorities had to utilize heavy machinery to clear vehicles blocking access to fire trucks.
Evacuation orders were in place for around 10,000 homes and 15,000 businesses, with over 100 police officers helping to facilitate the process. However, the evacuation was initially chaotic due to the area’s layout and limited access routes.
So far, authorities report several structures destroyed, but no injuries or missing persons have been reported. The fire has produced an immense cloud of smoke visible throughout Los Angeles.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
