Hey Rosetta! is ending a near decade-long hiatus with a series of reunion shows in St. John’s, Toronto, and Montreal, according to an announcement published by the band. The indie rock group, which played its last show in 2017, will perform four shows at the Jag Soundhouse in St. John’s in February, bringing the seven-piece lineup back to the stage for the first time in years.
Band History and Critical Milestones
Formed as a seven-piece indie rock band, Tim Baker, Adam Hogan, Phil Maloney, Josh Ward, Kinley Dowling, Romesh Thavanathan, and Mara Pellerin make up Hey Rosetta!. According to the band’s history, their debut album, Plan Your Escape, turns 20 years old this year. Their 2008 record, Into Your Lungs (And Around In Your Heart And On Through Your Blood), earned a shortlist nomination for the Polaris Music Prize.
Over their active years, the group released four full-length studio albums, five EPs, and a live album. Their final studio album, Second Sight, was released in 2014. Throughout their career, Hey Rosetta! won several MusicNL and East Coast Music Awards and received a Juno Award nomination in 2012.
The Road Back to the Stage
Reflecting on the decision to return, Tim Baker detailed the internal process of bringing the band back together in a letter published on Tuesday. “We always thought we would get back together and play again someday. But of course our lives began orbiting around new projects and purposes, and to mobilise the will and energy and dedication to do the thing justice seemed almost impossible,” Baker wrote.
Baker noted that he eventually reached out to his bandmates to gauge interest in a reunion. “I screwed up the courage to ask Phil & Romesh, Adam & Josh, Kinley & Mara, and every one of them said yes right away … Why not go back into it, enjoy it & celebrate it for what it was, what it took to do, and what it gave,” he wrote in the letter.
