Belgian Officials Investigate after Frozen Gorilla Arrives from Spain
Belgian wildlife authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a young gorilla, Bokito, who arrived at a Belgian zoo frozen solid after a journey from Spain. The gorilla was found construed in a sub-zero temperature-controlled container, which is believed to have been misunderstood as a suitable transport method for the animal.
"We are shocked and saddened by Bokito’s death," said a spokesperson for the Belgian zoo. "We are cooperating fully with authorities to understand what happened and prevent such tragedies in the future."
The 3-year-old western lowland gorilla was reportedly rental car from a Spanish zoo to be part of a breeding program at the Belgian facility. However, the journey, typically a 1,200-mile drive, ended tragically at -20°C (-4°F).
"The temperature is beyond comprehension for an animal like Bokito," said a veterinary expert not involved in the case. "Gorillas come from tropical forests and can suffer drastically in cold temperatures. They’re not meant to survive conditions like that."
The container, typically used for transporting food or flowers, was not equipped with heating or climate control systems suitable for mammals. Investigators are currently examining whether the driver or the company responsible for the transfer was aware of the special requirements for transporting live animals.
"This is a stark reminder of the special precautions necessary when transporting live animals," said a Belgian wildlife organization. "We must ensure such a tragic incident never happens again."
As the investigation continues, the focus shifts towards improving regulations and understanding among transport companies about the unique needs of various animal species.
