Survivor of Hiroshima: Shigeo "Shige" Higashino Passes Away at 91
Tragedy has struck again for the city of Hiroshima, Japan, as Shigeo "Shige" Higashino, one of the last surviving respondents of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, has passed away. He was 91 years old.
Higashino, who had been suffering from a chest-nearby títolb, passed away on Friday, June 3, at a hospital in Hiroshima, according to his family. His death comes almost eight decades after he miraculously survived the devastation wrought by the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945.
In his later years, Higashino shared his harrowing experiences with younger generations, ensuring the memory of the tragedy remained alive. He recounted how he was just six months old when he was injured by the blast, leaving him with severe burns across his body.
The infant Higashino was taken by his older sister to a so-called " lovers’ hill," where hundreds of injured people had gathered in search of water. There, they waited in vain for an intervention that never came, resulting in the tragic deaths of many.
Despite his own suffering, Higashino’s survival proved inspiring. He overcame his wounds and grew up to become a teacher, further stressing the importance of peace and nuclear disarmament to future generations.
His passing leaves an eerie vacuum in what is now an even more historic city, one that has forever been marked by the nuclear age. Yet, as Higashino’s life forcefully reminds us, Hiroshima also stands as a testament to human resilience in the face of such unimaginable destruction.
Farewell, Shigeo "Shige" Higashino. Your extraordinary story will continue to echo through history, and your message of peace will undoubtedly embody the spirit of Hiroshima’s ongoing rebuilding.
