Five U.S. Presidents Gather to Bid Farewell to Jimmy Carter
A historic gathering took place this Thursday, January 9, as the five living U.S. Presidents came together to pay their respects at the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. The unprecedented meeting at Washington National Cathedral underscored the significance of Carter’s legacy, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100.
President Joe Biden, Former Presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton stood united in mourning, joined by their spouses (except Michelle Obama) and hundreds of political leaders, diplomats, and international personalities. This was the first time since 2018 that all five presidents had gathered for a single event.
President Biden eulogized Carter, highlighting his strong character as the most enduring trait. With decades of political experience, Biden recalled his early endorsement of Carter’s presidential candidacy as a young senator. "Jimmy’s characteristic most enduring is his strong character – character, character, character," Biden emphasized.
Biden reflected on the importance of character in shaping lives and nations, quoting Carter’s own words, "The best way to enhance freedom in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic system is worth emulating."
The funeral, which assembled five U.S. Presidents in one place, is a rare occurrence in American history. Before 1991, only two periods saw more than five living Presidents at a time, the most recent being in 1861. Such gatherings since then have been limited to solemn or commemorative events, as noted by The New York Times.
The last such event was the funeral of George H.W. Bush in 2018, but tensions between Trump and other leaders were evident. In contrast, Carter’s funeral held a more conciliatory tone, reflecting the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to building bridges between nations and people.
The first modern gathering of five living Presidents occurred on November 4, 1991, during the dedication of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. Since then, five Presidents have also gathered for the funerals of Ronald Reagan in 2004 and Richard Nixon in 1994, where Bill Clinton urged a holistic evaluation of Nixon’s presidency, acknowledging his contributions alongside his administration’s mistakes.
