Blizzard in Trondheim: Liverpool Fan’s Match Day Plans Dashed by Snow Chaos in Mid-Norway

NRK veteran Klaus Sonstad among many stranded as severe snowstorm hits Trøndelag region
Article:
In the quiet hours of Friday morning, as the first light of day broke over Trondheim, a winter wonderland unfolded. But for many, this was no ordinary morning. A sudden snowstorm had swept in overnight, turning roads into treacherous paths and unleashing chaos across Mid-Norway.
Among those caught in the storm was Klaus Sonstad, a long-time NRK profile and Liverpool FC supporter. He was on his way to Trondheim Airport Værnes, en route to Liverpool for their highly anticipated Premier League clash against Manchester United. But the snow had other plans.
Sonstad, now employed at Nye Hjorten Teater in Trondheim after leaving NRK last summer, found himself in a gridlocked traffic jam on the E6 motorway. After two hours of inching forward, he and his companions made a decision: they would turn back and reschedule their journey.
"There was a fly bus stuck on the motorway, which caused a massive traffic jam," Sonstad recounted to Dagbladet. "We decided to turn around after two hours. The queue suddenly started moving again."
The police in Trøndelag had already been bivouacked with calls about hazardous driving conditions, issuing a stark warning: "Take care of the weather and wind, and leave the car at home if you can."
Henrik Storfjeld-Andersen, a 25-year-old, was another victim of the storm. He and his friends had set off at 4 AM for a flight to Paris from Værnes, but the journey took three hours instead of the usual 30 minutes. By 8:15 AM, their flight had departed without them.
"It was quite funny," said Storfjeld-Andersen, speaking to Dagbladet. "We spent hours marinating in our own sweat, only to watch our flight take off without us."
The polar low pressure system had been wreaking havoc in Mid-Norway and Nordvestlandet for hours; closed bridges, power outages, and major delays in public transport were just some of the consequences.
Trafikksentralen’s Per Slaattsveen told Dagbladet that while the snowfall had eased around 8 AM, the aftermath was still causing delays. "The gritting teams have done an excellent job, but some roads are still tricky. Traffic is moving slower than usual. We urge drivers to be patient and adjust their speed accordingly."
