Funeral Proceedings and Community Grief
Mourners gathered at St Nicholas Church in Westbury, Corbally, to attend the funeral Mass for Bryan Lowe, as reported by the Limerick Post. Fr Richard Davern told the congregation that parents and grandparents throughout Ireland are “full of fear” of the society their children and grandchildren are growing up in. Questioning a perceived lack of respect for human life, the priest asked attendees, “What is happening in our society, where do we turn, how can some sections of society have lost all connection to God?” According to coverage of the service, Fr Davern also urged journalists to “turn the mirror” on Irish society and address deeper questions weighing on the public.
During the service, a local singer performed Joan Baez’s song “All My Trials,” bringing the church to silence and tears. Students from St Munchin’s College, where Lowe was a sixth-year student, formed guards of honour outside the church. His blue-coloured coffin was carried by family members, including his mother, Crystal, and his father, Brian. Crystal Lowe expressed gratitude to the school and her son’s classmates for their support, telling the congregation that her son was a “great boy” who had made her proud. Members of local motorcycle clubs also formed a guard of honour, escorting the funeral cortège to Doonass Cemetery in County Clare, where Lowe was laid to rest.
The Fatal Incident in County Clare
The teenager lost his life on Friday, September 4, when he was struck by a vehicle while riding an electric dirt bike on a rural road at Cottage Cross, Clonlara, in southeast Clare. According to Gardaí, the alarm was raised at approximately 11pm, and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene after being knocked down and dragged under a vehicle that failed to remain at the location. Investigators examining the case stated they are “following a definite line of enquiry,” which includes investigating whether the teenager was deliberately run down.
As part of their ongoing inquiries, Gardaí appealed for information regarding the driver and occupants of a silver or gold-colored Skoda Octavia with registration 05-C-5982. Authorities stated the vehicle was spotted in the Clonlara and Castleconnell area on the night of the incident and the following morning. A photograph of the car was publicly released by investigators, who recovered the vehicle partially burned in Castleconnell, County Limerick, on Saturday, September 5. Gardaí have also conducted searches of residential properties and seized various evidential items as part of the case.
Tributes and Continuing Investigation
Family members and school representatives remembered Lowe as a dedicated young man with a strong work ethic. Fr Davern noted that while academic schooling was not his primary focus, the teenager was “determined” to complete his Leaving Certificate examinations in September and intended to build a career in the construction sector using his hands. A cousin told mourners that Lowe possessed “a hunger to work, a hunger to learn, a hunger to improve himself,” coupled with a gentle disposition and a smile capable of lighting up a room.
While the investigation remains active, Fr Davern encouraged the grieving family to place their trust in law enforcement. He asked relatives to “give them the time needed, that they will see to it that the truth and justice around Bryan’s death will be established.” The family offered public prayers for first responders and Garda members handling the case, asking for strength and compassion in their ongoing work.
