Emergency Evacuations in Hollywood as New Blaze Threatens Iconic Neighborhoods
Article:
Holiday weekends in Los Angeles have been marred by a spate of wildfires, with the latest inferno forcing residents in the heart of historic Hollywood to evacuate. The Hollywood Boulevard area was declared an immediate threat zone, with fire officials ordering a mandatory evacuation and closing the region to public access.
The newest wildfire erupted in the Hollywood Hills region, adding to the five already active blazes across the city, as reported by Reuters. This-panel fire, according to Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Chief Christina Crowley, has consumed around 4 hectares of brush, prompting the evacuation of the entire zone bounded by Hollywood Boulevard to the south, Mulholland Drive to the north, Highway 101 to the east, and Laurel Canyon Boulevard to the west.
Among the most vulnerable areas is Pacific Palisades, one of the nation’s most expensive neighborhoods, where homes have averaged $3.7 million in recent years. Notable residents include Jamie Lee Curtis, Mandy Moore, and Mark Hamill, who have been advised to flee their homes.
The ongoing fires in Los Angeles, which began Tuesday, have claimed the lives of at least five people, destroyed hundreds of homes, and strained firefighting resources to their limits. Over 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate.
"Resources are stretched very thin," said LAFD Assistant Chief Anthony Marouni, cited by BTA News. "We simply don’t have enough firefighters to manage each individual fire."
To urgent assistance, firefighters are being dispatched from six states, with 250 firetrucks carrying 1,000 personnel deployed from Northern to Southern California.
In Pacific Palisades, water shortages have led to the drying up of some fire hydrants. "We’re maxed out," said Janice Kenoonis, head of the local water and power service. "We’re fighting this wildfire with the city’s water system, and that’s a monumental challenge."
President Joe Biden joined California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday at a Santa Monica fire station to assess the situation firsthand. Newsom declared a state of emergency, while Biden designated California a major disaster area, pledging federal support.
"Folks, we’re going to do everything we can to bring these fires under control," Biden said. "But the road ahead is long, and it will take time."
Local residents described the scene as resembling a war zone. As of now, none of the fires have been fully contained, effectively surrounding the city.
