Disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is scheduled to transfer from a Texas federal prison to the Austin Transitional Center halfway house on August 23, 2027. The move comes several years before her original release date, following a sentence reduction and credits under federal guidelines.
Elizabeth Holmes is preparing for a change of address that will bring her back to Austin, Texas, several years ahead of her original release date. According to an update from the Department of Justice’s Victim Notification System, the former biotech executive has been approved for placement in a community correction center and is scheduled to be placed there next year.
Holmes, 42, is currently serving her sentence at the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, where she has been held since May 2023 alongside high-profile inmates including Ghislaine Maxwell. Under the updated schedule, she will move roughly 100 miles southwest to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, situated just down the road from the Austin airport.
Sentence Reductions and the Road to Del Valle
She was originally sentenced in late 2022 to more than 11 years behind bars after a jury found her guilty of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for knowingly misleading investors at Theranos.
Her path to a halfway house was smoothed by a combination of legislative changes and judicial discretion. In March, U.S. District Judge Edward Davila granted a defense motion to trim 12 months off her sentence, citing a retroactive change to federal sentencing guidelines for first-time, non-violent offenders alongside earned time through the First Step Act as well as credits earned under federal policy.

The adjustment moved her ultimate prison release date on federal inmate trackers to February 22, 2030 while clearing the way for her August 2027 transfer to the privately owned, 460-bed residential facility operated by CoreCivic in Del Valle near downtown Austin.
Life at the Austin Transitional Center and Bureau of Prisons Guidelines
Residential reentry centers, commonly referred to as halfway houses, provide a supervised environment designed to assist inmates as they approach their eventual release into the public. These facilities offer structured support systems, including employment counseling, job placement, and financial management assistance.
When reached for comment regarding the upcoming transfer, the Federal Bureau of Prisons issued a standard statement noting that the agency does not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual, including release plans.
The agency added that specific designation details are typically withheld until an inmate physically arrives at a facility.
Upon completing her time at the Del Valle facility and achieving full release, Holmes will remain under the supervision of the United States Probation Office in Austin, where her family resides.
Legal Standing and Renewed Public Scrutiny
The halfway house notification arrives alongside a legal and media landscape that continues to shadow the defunct blood-testing startup. Last year, a U.S. appeals court formally rejected an appeal from Holmes and her second-in-command, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, thereby upholding both their fraud convictions and a $452 million restitution order.
At the same time, public interest in the rise and fall of Theranos has flared anew. Filmmakers Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim produced a documentary chronicling the weeks leading up to Holmes’s surrender titled You Can See Everything,
which recently screened to strong critical notices at the Telluride Film Festival ahead of its October 16 release.
