Dusica Roberts and Verity Malinowska Win Bake Master Battles
Two baker friends who started making cakes in a home kitchen have won an international television competition. Dusica Roberts, from Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, and Verity Malinowska, from Plymouth, competed on the Canadian Food Network series Bake Master Battles.
The pair secured victory in a Halloween-themed episode featuring a zombie cake sculpture. The pair described the win as a surreal and exciting experience.
From Home Kitchens to International Television
Before launching her cake business called Dusi-Cake about 15 years ago, Roberts worked as a chef prior to having children. She eventually started baking for her family at home. Malinowska and Roberts crossed paths roughly a decade ago at a baking competition held in Birmingham.
The two bakers immediately connected and began working together. Malinowska noted that the partnership makes even early-morning airport arrivals exciting because they share a strong bond and genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Even being at the airport at 06:00 is very exciting, because me and Dusica absolutely love each other, we just have the most fun,
Malinowska said.
Competing Under Pressure on Set
The production presented intense time constraints for the competitors. The opening challenge required the duo to produce a cupcake display in just 45 minutes. Following that, a three-hour battle challenged them to construct a zombie cake sculpture.
Roberts pointed out that such a sculpture would normally require days of work, making the three-hour limit a significant challenge. That could normally take days. Making it in three hours was a lot,
Roberts said. It was intense.
She credited their success to their strong teamwork, explaining that they communicate naturally without needing to speak much. Luckily, Verity and I work really well together,
Roberts said. We don’t even really need to talk to each other, we just naturally come together.
Malinowska praised the production team for running a smooth operation and making them feel welcome and at ease despite the intense atmosphere on set. The show itself is amazing, they ran it so smoothly, we really felt we were looked after,
Malinowska said. It’s quite intense on set but they just made you feel really welcome and really at ease.
