According to a study published in the Journal of Personality, the way adults narrate life-changing events predicts everyday functional impairment and can reveal the severity of personality disorders. Led by Kennedy M.
Shifting Diagnoses from Categories to Personality Functioning
Traditional psychiatry has long relied on rigid diagnostic categories where patients either meet the criteria for a disorder or do not. Newer frameworks evaluate patients on a sliding scale that measures the level of personality functioning, according to the research team. This dimensional approach assesses how well an individual maintains a stable identity, sets personal goals, and connects with others through empathy and intimacy.
Kulesz, Estefania Fernandez, and Carla Sharp investigated whether narrative themes could measure clinical dysfunction. The team recruited 140 young adults aged 18 to 25. This cohort included 94 college students and 46 individuals either diagnosed with borderline personality disorder or displaying traits of the condition, which is characterized by unstable relationships, emotional volatility, and a distorted self-image.
Evaluating Agency, Communion, and Deterioration in Life Stories
Participants completed a narrative interview where they imagined their lives as a book and detailed two transformative events. Trained coders evaluated these transcripts for five specific psychological themes: agency, communion, exploratory processing, growth, and deterioration. Agency measures the narrator’s sense of control, while communion tracks feelings of belonging and interpersonal connection. Exploratory processing captures how deeply a person analyzes an event’s meaning and worked through their changing sense of self.
Did you know? Narrative deterioration measures whether a narrator concluded that an event changed them for the better or revealed a permanent, negative flaw in their character.
Growth and deterioration measure whether an individual believes an event changed them for the better or revealed a permanent flaw. Alongside this interview, participants completed self-report surveys and semi-structured clinical interviews administered by trained graduate students to assess personality functioning and daily functional impairment.
Narrative Deterioration as a Predictor of Personality Disorders
When comparing narrative themes to personality assessments, researchers observed a clear pattern. Individuals with worse personality functioning told stories featuring lower levels of agency, communion, and personal growth, alongside higher levels of deterioration. One participant described childhood bullying as a permanent ego blow, stating, according to the research data, “I felt like that was a result of my own personal faults, or like something that I lacked in,” which ultimately led to self-harm.
Statistical models revealed that stories high in deterioration predicted worse scores on clinical interviews. According to the study findings, individuals who emphasized deterioration themes were nearly three times more likely to meet the clinical threshold for a personality disorder.
Limitations and Future Directions in Narrative Identity Research
The study relied partly on self-reported diagnoses, meaning some participants might not have met formal clinical criteria. Additionally, the functional impairment tool measured general life disability rather than exclusively tracking psychiatric symptoms. Researchers also noted lower reliability when agreeing on exploratory processing, suggesting that coding systems originally designed for typical populations may require adjustments to capture disordered thinking effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does narrative deterioration mean in psychology?
High deterioration scores suggest the individual believes an event fundamentally damaged them.
How do life stories relate to personality disorders?
According to research published in the Journal of Personality, the emotional and structural themes in a person’s life story—specifically high levels of deterioration and low agency—strongly predict everyday functional impairment and clinical personality disorder thresholds.
What is dimensional personality functioning?
It is a modern psychiatric framework that assesses a patient on a sliding scale based on how well they maintain an identity, set life goals, and connect with others, replacing strict binary diagnoses.
