Indonesia Urges Caution as Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Surge Hits China
Article:
The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) has sounded the alarm, urging the public to be vigilant against the risk of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) spreading, as cases surge in China. Despite no reported cases in Indonesia yet, the ministry emphasizes the importance of maintaining health precautions to prevent the virus from gaining a foothold.
According to Kemenkes RI spokesperson, Widyawati, steps to prevent the virus include maintaining a healthy lifestyle, regularly washing hands, and wearing masks in public places. These measures help bolster the immune system and reduce the risk of infection from various contagious viruses.
HMPV is a virus that can cause respiratory tract infections, with symptoms similar to the common flu. In severe cases, it can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia. While it’s generally not harmful to healthy adults, it poses a higher risk to children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions.
The Indonesian government continues to monitor the HMPV outbreak in China and other countries. It is taking proactive measures at international borders, including health screenings for travelers showing symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI).
