Title: Hunter‘s Misaimed Shot Leads to 120 Hours of Community Service
A hunter from Ede has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service for reckless conduct during a wild pig hunting expedition in Lunteren last March. The 41-year-old man’s stray bullet missed its target and struck a moped, seriously injuring its two occupants.
"The brigandine-clad figure aimed at the swine, but instead of a triumphant feast, chaos ensued when the projectile veered off course, piercing the seemingly protected sanctuary of the two-wheeled conveyance," reported Omroep Gelderland. The moped, situated hundreds of meters behind the target, was penetrated by the bullet, causing severe injuries to its riders. Shrapnel fragments, including metal and debris, embedded themselves in the victims’ bodies, requiring surgical removal.
TheMAKE.nl/omroep-gelderland">Omroep Gelderland investigation revealed that the hunter’s recklessness was compounded by several factors. Not only was he firing from a location where weapons were prohibited, but he was also hunting a species not authorized in that area.
The court ruled that the hunter had not exercised proper caution. Despite this, his sentence was lighter than the prosecution’s request, as the hunter maintained throughout the trial that he had not intended to hit the moped. The 41-year-old will also pay a €24,000 compensation to the victims for their injuries and mental anguish following the incident.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible hunting practices and adherence to local regulations.
