GTA 6 Leak Saga Continues: Hacker Claims Source Code Remains Online
The individual responsible for a significant leak of Grand Theft Auto 6 footage has resurfaced, suggesting the game’s source code is still circulating online. This comes years after the initial breach that sent shockwaves through the gaming industry.
The Original Breach and Its Aftermath
In September 2022, Arion Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ ransomware group, leaked numerous clips of early GTA 6 gameplay. The stolen footage included testing materials, weapons, vehicles, and map locations. This was a major security breach for Rockstar Games, the developer behind the highly anticipated title.
Kurtaj, who is autistic, was later sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in late 2023. The judge determined he remained a “high risk to the public” and even expressed a continued desire to engage in cybercrime, threatening further hacks against Rockstar.
Recent Claims from Inside a Secure Hospital
Recent posts on Snapchat, dated March 8, show Kurtaj from within his hospital confinement. He referenced a “bullshit hacking charge” and alluded to the continued existence of the GTA 6 source code. Messages exchanged with another individual, identified as Omar, further claim the source code is “somewhere” on the internet.
Omar suggests multiple individuals possess the code and are intentionally withholding it, hoping to encourage a release of GTA 6 from Rockstar.
Past Source Code Leaks and Potential Impact
This isn’t the first instance of GTA source code being leaked. In 2023, source code for GTA 5 was compromised, reportedly containing files related to GTA 6 and Bully 2. While the link to that leak was quickly removed, the code reportedly spread across various online platforms.
Access to the source code could provide leakers with an unprecedented level of insight into Rockstar’s plans for the game.
