What’s Driving This Aurora Activity?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm watch, triggered by a high-speed solar wind. This activity increases the likelihood of seeing the aurora at latitudes lower than usual.

The aurora, also known as the Northern Lights in the Northern Hemisphere, is a result of interactions between the Sun’s activity and Earth’s magnetic field. The Sun goes through an 11-year cycle of activity, and we are currently just past the peak of a cycle, leading to increased aurora displays in recent years.

Where to Look for the Lights This Weekend

NOAA forecasters anticipate the Planetary K-index (Kp) to reach 4.67 (G1 level) late on Friday, March 6, 2026. A Kp index of 4 to 5 suggests the aurora may be visible low on the northern horizon in states near the Canadian border.

Residents of the following US states have a good chance of spotting the aurora, provided skies are clear:
