Title: Enhanced Policing in Tromsø: A Safer New Year’s Eve
Metro flames, underage drinking, and youth aggression marred last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in Tromsø. In response, local police have pledged to strengthen their presence this year to ensure a smoother and safer event.
Last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in Tromsø were overshadowed by multiple incidents involving youth, with police struggling to manage crowds and maintain order. Flares were set off in the city center, underage drinkers caused concern, and officers faced aggression and disrespect from some partygoers.
Stasjonssjef Anita Hermandsen, speaking to NRK, acknowledged that brat på nyttårsaften (drunkenness on New Year’s Eve) was not a novel phenomenon, but the level of aggression among the youth was. "We experienced a kind of mass suggestion among the young people that hindered our ability to handle problem individuals," she said. Even strangers approached police in an attempt to provoke reactions.
A More Visible Police Presence
This year, Tromsø police intend to boost their numbers to better manage crowds and prevent dangerous situations. Uniformed officers will be highly visible, with the aim of maintaining order, preventing disturbances, and ensuring everyone has a good time.
Hermandsen asks partygoers to communicate respectfully with officers and cooperate in maintaining a peaceful environment. She also reminds the public that open drinking in the presence of minors will not be tolerated, and underage drinking will result in alcohol confiscation.
Safety Tips for Parents and Young People
The stasjonssjef encourages parents to engage with their teenage children about responsible drinking and plan return times. She emphasizes that taxi lines are long on New Year’s Eve, so parents should consider driving their children home.
Hermandsen also warns against unsafe use of fireworks, noting that those targeting people or buildings will be reported and confiscated.
With enhanced policing and responsible participation from the public, Tromsø looks to host a safer and more enjoyable New Year’s Eve celebration this year.
