Indian dance by migrant workers, silat moves by youngsters at multicultural Chingay Parade

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

Singapore’s Chingay Parade, a key component of the nation’s Chinese New Year celebrations, is set to take place on February 27 and 28, 2026, at the F1 Pit Building. This year’s parade, themed “Wish,” will be particularly notable as it marks the first time migrant workers will participate as performers.

A First for Chingay

Among the more than 3,000 performers will be Mr. Manorenjin, a 31-year-old migrant worker from India. He previously watched the parade on YouTube in 2025. Mr. Manorenjin, who has been in Singapore for a year and a half, is a trained dance choreographer and expressed his appreciation for the parade’s inclusive representation of diverse cultures. He will be performing alongside his cousin, Mr. Subin Lal, 30, and over 20 other participants from the Migrant Workers’ Centre.

Did You Realize? Chingay 2026 will feature floats that are 7 meters in length, more than double the size of the 3-meter floats used in previous years.

The third act of the parade will showcase Indian art forms, including lamp and lotus dances accompanied by traditional Indian music. Mr. Subin Lal shared his pride in being part of the event, noting the group has been diligently practicing for months. The 54th edition of Chingay will too feature a new immersive experience for both performers and audience members, with seating arranged around a circular, multi-tier stage.

Younger performers will also be featured. Nine-year-old Humairah Mohd Hanafi, a Primary 3 pupil, will be performing silat as part of the second act. She will perform alongside 18-year-old Farrel Danish Muhamad Farid, who is also a choreographer for the silat segment, leading a group of around 50 athletes.

Expert Insight: The inclusion of migrant workers in Chingay represents a significant step towards greater representation and inclusivity within Singapore’s cultural celebrations, potentially fostering a stronger sense of community and shared identity.

According to Mr. Kia Siang Wei, executive committee chairman of Chingay 2026, the event aims to create more immersive engagements between performers and the audience. As of February 7, 95 percent of tickets had been sold, and they remain available through SISTIC, with Singapore citizens able to use their SG Culture Pass credits towards purchase. PAssion members also receive a 20 percent discount.
