Indonesia Islamic Boarding School Enrollment Statistics

The Ministry of Religious Affairs is currently updating national religious education data through a by-name-by-address mechanism, having verified 4.634 million students across Islamic boarding schools and informal institutions. This ongoing data collection effort aims to eliminate duplicates and build an accurate, integrated database for future government programs and targeted educational policies.

Did You Know? Based on the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Data and Information Center cut-off date, exactly 4,634,406 students have been collected and verified in the data collection process.

How Is the Ministry Verifying Islamic Boarding School Students?

Data collection no longer relies solely on aggregate figures. Instead, the process focuses on individual data that can be verified based on students’ identities and actual presence.

“Every student’s data must be verified based on their identity, address, and active status,” Basnang Said, the Director General of Islamic Boarding Schools at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, said on Sunday.

The verified students come from Islamic boarding schools as well as informal Islamic educational institutions. These include Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah (MDT) and Al-Quran Education Institutions (LPQ).

What Steps Are Being Taken to Consolidate Religious Education Data?

The update serves as part of the ministry’s efforts to build a more accurate, integrated, and accountable database. During this process, the ministry is eliminating potential duplicates found in previous aggregated data.

Internal consolidation involves syncing data on Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and madrasahs. Non-formal education units and salafiyah Islamic boarding schools use the National Education Unit Identification Number (NPSN) to support this process. The ministry is finalizing data synchronization with the Education Master Data (Dapodik) of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

Why Accurate Data Matters for Government Programs and Scholarships

Updating by-name-by-address data is necessary to ensure government programs are delivered effectively. The proper distribution of the Smart Indonesia Program (PIP), Santri Scholarships, along with other types of government support and assistance for Islamic boarding schools and educators, relies completely on dependable information.

The data transformation and consolidation process continues until a comprehensive picture of educational units and the student population emerges. The updated information is expected to form the basis for planning more targeted policies starting in the 2026/2027 academic year.
