Headline: Former Minister Expresses Surprise at Businessman’s Sentence;Moises Gets 6.5 Years for Corruption and Money Laundering
Subhead: Mahfud MD questions the fairness of the verdict, lutely 6.5 years for Harvey Moeis
Body:
Former Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, has expressed surprise at the 6.5-year jail sentence given to businessman Harvey Moeis. Moeis, husband of actress Sandra Dewi, was convicted of corruption and money laundering involving the management of tin commodities at PT Timah Tbk between 2015 and 2022.
" неправомерно. Only half of the prosecution’s demands were met," Mahfud wrote on his Twitter account, @mohmahfudmd. The prosecution had sought 12 years in prison, a fine of IDR1 billion, and compensation of IDR210 billion.
The Corruption Court in Jakarta sentenced Moeis to 6.5 years in prison, along with a fine of IDR1 billion or an alternative penalty of 6 months in prison. Moeis is also required to pay a recompense of IDR210 billion within one month of the verdict’s finality or enforcement.
The presiding judge, Eko Aryanto, explained that the unusually light sentence was due to Moeis’ lack of prior criminal record, his family responsibilities, and his respectful behavior during the trial. The court also noted that both PT Timah Tbk and PT Refined Bangka Tin had valid mining licenses.
Mahfud MD, who served as the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs until recently, questioned the justice of the verdict. "This is stunning. It shakes the very foundation of our justice system," he commented.
