Breaking: Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry Vows Serious Response to Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Ambassador
JAKARTA — The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has issued a stern response to allegations of sexual misconduct involving a high-ranking diplomat at the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. The ministry takes the allegations seriously and has committed to taking appropriate action.
In a written statement issued in Jakarta on Tuesday evening, Ministry spokesperson Roy Soemirat confirmed the existence of media reports alleging misconduct by an official within the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja. "Kemlu takes these reports very seriously and continues to investigate and follow up on the matter according to applicable legal provisions," Roy said.
Soemirat revealed that the ministry is engaged in ongoing communication with all relevant parties to gain comprehensive information about the facts of the case. "Kemlu has provided psychological support to the staff involved and continues to monitor and follow up on the outcome of the investigation," he added.
The ministry was quick to reiterate its strict code of ethics and high professional standards for all its personnel. "Kemlu does not tolerate any behavior that goes against the principles of diplomatic ethics," said Roy.
Previously, Nigerian media sources reported a petition filed by a former embassy staff member with local authorities and the Indonesian Embassy. The petition, titled "Urgent Request for Intervention in the Case of Sexual Harassment, Intimidation, and Unlawful Termination of Employment," was received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador, the chief of staff, and the Inspector General of Police in June 2024.
The petitioner, whose identity has been kept confidential for privacy and security reasons, accused Ambassador Usra Hendra Harahap of engaging in unwanted and inappropriate physical behavior during a official duty on February 7, 2024. The incident allegedly occurred while the victim was assisting the ambassador in locating a Nigerian state on a map in his office.
