To facilitate financial flexibility, the Avalanche traded forward Valeri Nichushkin to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In return, Colorado secured a second-round pick in the 2026 draft, a third-round pick in the 2027 draft, and a fifth-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft, while shedding the final four seasons of Nichushkin’s eight-year contract.

Financial savings generated from trading Nichushkin, alongside roster adjustments involving Colton and Drury, enabled the franchise to keep its defensive unit intact. The club signed Brett Kulak to a five-year contract and brought in Brent Burns on a one-year deal on June 26. Furthermore, the team signed forward Jaden Schwartz to a three-year contract on July 1. Schwartz, 34, recorded 26 points with 11 goals and 15 assists in 50 games with the Seattle Kraken last season, boasting a Stanley Cup championship won with the St. Louis Blues in 2019.

“We thought Jaden Schwartz would be a great fit offensively, a top-nine role, kind of go anywhere in the lineup, gives us depth,” Sakic said. “Brings that championship pedigree, great guy, kind of fits our identity and the way we like to play. Competitor, great in the dressing room, works extremely hard off the ice.”

Looking Ahead: Contract Statuses and Team Outlook

Front-office tasks remain on the horizon, specifically new contracts for defenseman Cale Makar and coach Jared Bednar, neither of whom is signed beyond the upcoming season, according to franchise disclosures. Despite these pending negotiations, management has signaled confidence in the current group.

With full seasons anticipated from trade deadline acquisitions Nazem Kadri and Nicolas Roy, paired with an intact defense and newly acquired salary cap space, leadership rejected the idea of a complete rebuild. “We could panic and try and blow everything up and start all over,” Sakic said. “But this team, what they’ve done over the course of the year, was pretty remarkable. I want to give them an opportunity to try and do it again.”
