The world is facing a stark reality: Sugary drinks are causing one in every ten new cases of diabetes type 2 worldwide. A revelation that should shock us all, given that over 1.1 million Dutch adults already grapple with this metabolic disorder, and another 1.4 million are in its prediabetic stage. Adding to this concern, pediatricians are seeing an increasing number of children and young adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, a trend that’s more alarming due to the association with sugary drinks.
Research has confirmed the link between sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes, with youth being particularly vulnerable. In the Netherlands alone, teens aged 12 to 18 drink an average of 200 ml (around 10 ounces) of sugary drinks daily, amounting to about 3 liters per week.
Dutch Diabetes Fund director Diena Halbertsma urges immediate action, "The cabinet must swiftly implement the sugar tax." Known as a ‘smarter’ sugar tax, it encourages producers to use less sugar in their products by incrementally taxing those with higher sugar content. This twin approach promotes healthier drinks and makes the right choice easier for consumers.
Currently, the Netherlands is one of just 45 countries that haven’t implemented a sugar tax. The rest, including the UK, have seen positive results and reduced consumption. Addressing this urgent need, the Dutch cabinet is due to decide this spring whether to adopt the smarter sugar tax.
As adults and children face an increasing risk of type 2 diabetes, driven by excessive sugar consumption, the question is not whether action is needed, but how soon we can act.
