The Iowa Communications Network (ICN) has completed a modernization project across the State of Iowa Capitol Complex in Des Moines. This initiative enhances the reliability of essential safety systems within 13 state government buildings.
Modernizing Capitol Complex Safety
In partnership with Granite Telecommunications, the ICN installed 81 EPIK devices. These devices connect elevators, emergency phones, and fire panel systems to a fresh network designed for increased dependability.
The new system replaces outdated telephone service lines—known as Plain Classic Telephone Service or POTS—with a three-layer connection. This connection is supported by a direct fiber internet line, and is backed up by two separate cellular providers.
Redundancy and Reliability
Each EPIK unit includes a 24-hour battery, ensuring continued operation during power outages. The technology was designed to integrate with existing equipment, reducing overall costs.
The project is now complete, and all 13 buildings within the Capitol Complex have been upgraded. The ICN may explore using the Granite EPIK solution as a substitute for fax lines in the future.
