event, the physical specifications of the hardware revealed a major engineering shift. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max introduce substantial upgrades to imaging, mobile silicon, and sustained performance, headlined by a massive jump in energy capacity.
Battery Capacities and the Regulatory Shipping Hurdle for iPhone 18 Pro Max
Official energy labels published for European Union product pages confirmed the exact power specifications for the new devices. The standard iPhone 18 Pro features a 4,056 mAh battery, marking a 1.7% increase compared to the predecessor’s 3,988 mAh capacity. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro Max carries a 5,391 mAh battery, delivering an 11.7% increase over the 4,823 mAh cell found in the previous generation, according to regulatory documentation.
That physical expansion created a logistical challenge. Because the iPhone 18 Pro Max features a single-cell battery with a capacity exceeding 20 watt-hours (Wh), it triggers strict international transport regulations governing lithium-ion shipments. To navigate these requirements during factory transit, Apple engineered an innovative battery-firmware solution
that caps the operational capacity below the 20 Wh threshold from the point of manufacture until the device is activated by the end user.
New iOS 27 Prepare to Ship Controls for Transport and Repair
The 20 Wh threshold applies beyond initial factory delivery. Any subsequent transport scenario—including returning a device for repair, trading it in, selling it, or gifting it—requires the battery to remain beneath that legal limit. To handle this, Apple added a dedicated Prepare to Ship
tool directly within the iOS 27 settings menu.
Users can initiate the routine by opening the Settings app, navigating to General, selecting Transfer or Reset iPhone, and tapping Prepare to Ship. The utility discharges the cell and sets a temporary charge ceiling. While the discharge cycle runs—which can take anywhere from a few minutes up to a couple of hours if starting from a full charge—the device may grow warmer than usual before cooling down once it is ready for transit.
Advanced 48MP Fusion Camera and Variable Aperture Optics
Beyond power systems, Apple announced a complete overhaul of the pro camera architecture. Both models incorporate a new 48MP Fusion Main camera equipped with a variable aperture
system driven by six laser-cut blades. The mechanical blades smoothly adjust between different aperture steps to optimize depth of field and lighting automatically, producing sharper low-light images and crisp group portraits.

Photographic professionals gain manual control over four distinct aperture settings inside the Camera app, while third-party developers can utilize a newly released application programming interface to control the entire range. Additionally, the camera introduces Apple Reference Image technology, which signs every pixel captured on the sensor to generate an unalterable digital negative for authenticity verification.
A20 Pro Silicon and Global Release Schedule
Processing power sees a major leap through the A20 Pro chip, fabricated on a 2-nanometer process. The silicon pairs a 6-core CPU featuring integrated Neural Accelerators with a 7-core GPU that delivers up to 40% faster performance than the A19 Pro. A Dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles total on-device artificial intelligence processing power, supporting heavy computational photography and advanced workloads.

The hardware arrives in four finishes: black, silver, glacier, and burgundy. Pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12, with official retail availability starting Friday, September 18. Meanwhile, iOS 27 launches for all compatible iPhone models on Monday, September 14.
