Cliffside Crisis Begins Over Unpaid Phone Installments

The sequence of events began at approximately 10 a.m. local time, when the 18-year-old youth walked to the edge of the Khavda hill cliff in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra, India, as reported by NDTV. According to the coverage, the teenager repeatedly stated “I will jump” to his parents while standing at the precipice. The extreme action stemmed from the young man’s inability to pay for a mobile phone he had purchased on an installment plan. Bystanders attempted to intervene during the crisis; an unidentified man told the youth to “Live for your mother,” to which the teenager replied, “No, I must die. That is the only way,” as detailed by NDTV.

Hours of Negotiation End in Fatal Falls

Village residents, police officers, and the teenager’s mother spent nearly three hours attempting to persuade the youth to move away from the cliff edge, urging him to consider his future and his parents. Despite these persistent efforts, the young man remained at the border of the cliff. The youth’s father, who had initially pleaded from the base of the hill, climbed up during the final 15 to 20 minutes of the standoff. As the teenager continued moving near the drop-off, the father attempted to pull him back. Around 13.00 siang waktu setempat, both father and son lost their balance and fell from the hill. Moments later, the mother, overcome by panic during the rescue attempt, also fell from the cliff, according to the accounts provided by NDTV.

Eyewitness Accounts Detail Family Pleas

Local witness Sanjay Jadhav described the prolonged attempts by family members and authorities to reason with the teenager before the fatal falls occurred. According to Jadhav, cited by NDTV, the parents and other individuals at the scene made extensive efforts to make the youth understand the situation, but he refused to listen and maintained his position at the edge of the hill while police officers were present. “The parents and other parties tried hard to make him understand, but he refused to listen and kept standing on the edge of the hill. Police officers were also there,” Jadhav stated, adding that the mother continuously pleaded with her son not to jump.
