Antisemitic Attacks Across Europe: Is Iran Orchestrating a New Wave of Terror?
A disturbing trend is gripping Jewish communities across Europe. From explosions in Liège and Amsterdam to arson attacks in London and Antwerp, a series of antisemitic incidents has escalated sharply in recent weeks. Since early March 2026, six confirmed attacks have targeted synagogues, a Jewish school, and ambulances belonging to a Jewish rescue service. A group calling itself “Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyyah” (Islamic Movement of the Righteous Companions / HAYI) has claimed responsibility for many of these attacks, releasing videos bearing its logo. Further claims of attacks in Greece, France, and the Netherlands are under investigation, with some officials suspecting disinformation or planned but thwarted attempts.
The Role of HAYI and Pro-Iranian Networks
The group HAYI was previously unknown. Analysis by the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) in The Hague traced the group’s first video back to March 9th, coinciding with the synagogue explosion in Belgium. HAYI announced the launch of “military operations against US and Israeli interests worldwide.” ICCT research indicates the group’s initial online presence emerged on a Telegram channel linked to a pro-Iranian Shia militia, which maintains close ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
Analysts note a consistent pattern in the dissemination of these messages: four Arabic-language Telegram channels, each with hundreds of thousands of subscribers, play a central role. Two of these channels are connected to pro-Iranian militias, while the other two present themselves as news outlets but primarily spread pro-Iranian content.
Echoes of Past Iranian Tactics
The situation is prompting comparisons to tactics previously employed by Iran. Lord Beamish, a member of the UK Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee, suggested Iran is replicating a “Russian playbook,” targeting dissidents and Jewish communities, potentially using criminal groups or paid individuals. UK authorities have reportedly uncovered over twenty Iran-backed plots since October 2024.
Rapid Dissemination and Potential Recruitment
The speed with which information about these attacks spreads online is also raising concerns. In the case of the explosion near a Jewish school, online mentions appeared just minutes before the event, suggesting those behind the propaganda had real-time information and potentially direct access to footage from the perpetrators.
Recent arrests in the Netherlands revealed that five suspects were between 17 and 19 years classic, leading investigators to believe that young people – potentially with criminal backgrounds – may be being recruited for these operations. This mirrors tactics observed in Russian sabotage activities in Europe.
