Strait of Hormuz Crisis: Iran Threatens Gulf Closure as US Blockade Bites
Tensions in the Middle East are escalating rapidly as Iran responds to the US-imposed blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The critical waterway, vital for global energy supplies, is now at the center of a standoff that threatens to disrupt international trade and further destabilize the region. Iran has warned it will not allow any exports or imports in the Persian Gulf, Oman Sea, or Red Sea if the US does not lift the blockade.
US Blockade and Iranian Response
The US Navy initiated the blockade on Monday following the failure of peace talks in Pakistan. President Trump accused Iran of “extortion” and announced intentions to intercept ships paying tolls to Iran for passage through the strait, as well as clearing alleged Iranian mines. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that military vessels approaching the strait will be “dealt with severely.”
This escalation follows “major combat operations” launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. The current situation arose after a deadline set by President Trump for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz passed without a resolution.
Saudi Arabia’s Concerns and Regional Impact
According to the Wall Street Journal, Saudi Arabia reportedly pressured the US to reconsider the blockade, fearing wider disruptions to shipping lanes and the oil market. The potential closure of the Red Sea, a crucial route for oil tankers, is a significant concern. Disruptions could send oil prices soaring, exacerbating existing economic pressures.

The Strait of Hormuz is a chokepoint for roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply, making it a strategically vital location. Any prolonged disruption could have severe consequences for the global economy.
Ceasefire and Future Negotiations
A ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran, announced just over a week ago, is now under threat. While there have been discussions about extending the ceasefire, the US has not yet approved an extension. The key sticking point remains Iran’s nuclear program.
