SIARGAO, Philippines — An Israeli content creator based in Siargao has issued an apology following a viral video that depicted the removal and subsequent crumpling of a sticker featuring the Philippine and Palestinian flags.
The video, shared by the content creator duo known as “The Jewish Nomads”—comprised of Ash, Maayan, and their two children—featured a female partner removing a “SIARGAO TOGETHER FOR HUMANITY” sticker from a post marked “KEEP SIARGAO CLEAN.” After removing the sticker, the individual displayed it to the camera before crumpling it. The clip, which was later reposted by a user on TikTok, drew significant backlash, with critics citing the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines (R.A. 8491) regarding the treatment of the national flag.
On May 16, the female partner addressed the incident, stating, “I want to say clearly that I take full responsibility for hurting Filipino people by crumpling their flag in the process. That was never my intention, and I truly apologize for that because we’ve met such beautiful Filipino people here, and I genuinely appreciate them so much.”
While the creators removed the viral reel, they maintained their stance on the removal of the sticker itself. “But I do not apologize for taking down the sticker itself. Because for me, humanity is never one-sided. If something truly stands for humanity, then it should hold space for both Israelis and Palestinians,” she said. She added that the decision to delete the post was prompted by outreach from fellow Israelis and Jewish individuals concerned about rising tensions on the island, noting, “protecting my people matters more to me than keeping a viral post online.”
Context and Community Impact
This incident follows reports from last month involving another video in which Israeli tourists were seen in a confrontation with locals in Siargao. These events have brought increased scrutiny to the conduct of tourists on the island, which is widely known for its surfing and tourism-driven economy. According to data from the Department of Tourism-Caraga Region, Israeli travelers represent a small fraction of the total foreign visitors to Siargao, a demographic largely dominated by tourists from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany.

In response to growing community concerns, the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines held a dialogue on May 17 with over 70 local business owners. Ambassador Dana Kursh addressed the attendees, stating, “If they are misbehaving, arrest them, press charges.” She emphasized that consular assistance does not provide immunity from local legal consequences and pledged to work with Israeli media to promote responsible conduct among travelers.
Potential Implications
As the island community navigates these tensions, stakeholders may expect a more rigorous enforcement of local conduct standards. The embassy’s intervention suggests a push for clearer expectations regarding tourist behavior, which could lead to more proactive reporting of incidents by local businesses. Future interactions between the international visitor community and local residents may be subject to heightened sensitivity, and local authorities will continue to emphasize the legal consequences of actions perceived as disrespectful to national symbols or community norms.
