Italy‘s Government Greenlights Extension of Military Aid to Ukraine
In a significant move, Italy’s government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni approved the continuation of military assistance to Ukraine on Monday. The decision, as reported by "European Truth," was announced by the ANSA news agency.
The government signed off on a decree that features "urgent measures to extend the authorization for the transfer of military vehicles, materials, and equipment to the state authorities of Ukraine." This marks the latest in a series of resolutions willingly adopted by the Italian government to support Ukraine’s defensive capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict.
Prime Minister Mario Draghi‘s previous administration initially authorized the supply of military aid to Ukraine. Following Meloni’s ascension to power in the fall of 2022, her Council of Ministers has consistently renewed these privileges, first for 2023 and subsequently for 2024.
To legally dispatch weapons to Ukraine, the government is required to obtain parliamentary approval. The current authorization is set to expire at the close of 2024. In December, the Italian government approved the tenth package of military aid to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The specific details of these shipments remain confidential.
