According to Woking, the 43-year-old former forward’s departure comes just two weeks before the opening match of the new campaign against Sutton United. Defoe was originally named as the replacement for Neal Ardley in March. During his brief tenure, he won two of his six league matches in charge to guide the club to a 10th-placed finish last season.
“Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position,” Defoe said in an Instagram post cited by club reports. He added that he felt extremely proud of the work undertaken during his time at the club and genuinely felt they were building something special.

Defoe’s ninth and final game in charge of Woking was a 1-0 defeat by Braintree Town in one of three pre-season friendlies. Before transitioning to the technical area, Defoe enjoyed a prolific playing career. He scored 305 goals in 763 senior appearances for clubs including West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland before retiring as a player in 2022.
