Julio Rodríguez Sent to IL for Concussion

The Seattle Mariners have placed outfielder Julio Rodríguez on the seven-day concussion injured list following a head injury sustained during Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. Rodríguez was struck in the back of the helmet by a throw from Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel while attempting to reach second base.

The Incident and Medical Status The injury occurred in the bottom of the first inning when Rodríguez, who had reached base on a walk, was caught in a double-play attempt. According to reporting from MLB Trade Rumors, Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel attempted a force out at second base, but his throw struck Rodríguez in the back of the helmet. Despite the contact, Rodríguez initially remained in the game, running to third base and playing the top half of the second inning before being removed. Lookout Landing reported that Rodríguez disappeared from the dugout during the bottom of the second inning. By the third, he had been replaced in center field. Mariners manager Dan Wilson confirmed postgame that the outfielder entered concussion protocol and would undergo further evaluation. The club opted for the seven-day concussion list, a move that provides the team with a roster spot while allowing for a cautious recovery period. Roster Adjustments and Replacement Options To fill the vacated spot on the 40-man roster, the Mariners selected infielder and outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni. The team also transferred right-hander Cooper Criswell to the 60-day injured list to accommodate the move. Criswell, who has been sidelined since June 9 with a pectoral strain, is not expected to return until after the August 3 trade deadline. The outfield depth chart faces immediate pressure. Víctor Robles, who replaced Rodríguez in the lineup on Thursday, is expected to see increased playing time. As CBS Sports noted, Robles was cleared to start in center field and bat eighth against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday after X-rays on his own forearm—injured by a pitch on Thursday—returned negative. Personnel Constraints and Tactical Outlook The loss of Rodríguez removes a significant offensive contributor from the lineup. Over the current season, Rodríguez has maintained a .259/.323/.424 slash line with 12 stolen bases and a 115 wRC+ rating. While the club has depth options, the internal solutions are limited. Mastrobuoni offers defensive versatility, having played every position except catcher in his career, though he has limited experience in center field at the major league level. Other internal candidates for center field duty include Luke Raley, who has logged 171 innings at the position, and Weston Wilson. However, the club’s reliance on utility players highlights the thin margin for error in the outfield. With the All-Star Break approaching in just over a week, the Mariners face a decision on whether to accelerate Rodríguez’s return or utilize the break to ensure he has fully cleared medical protocols, a strategy that would minimize his time missed during a critical stretch of the schedule.
